With an objective of providing better educational facility to the children of the police personnel, the government has planned to establish residential schools in the headquarter of all the police ranges in the State.

The State has six ranges: Southern Range (Mysuru), Western Range (Mangaluru), Eastern Range (Davangere), Central Range (Bengaluru), Northern Range (Belagavi) and North-eastern Range (Kalaburagi).

“The government wishes to set up one residential school in each headquarter of the respective ranges, the decision would help the police personnel who wanted a better school facility for their children”, said, Inspector General of Police (Northern Range), Bhaskar Rao.

Speaking to The Hindu , he said that such residential schools are already functioning in States such as Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra where the local government has taken this initiative for their police personnel.

"The government here too, wants similar benefits extended to the police personnel", Mr. Rao said.

He informed that the Home Department has directed the IGPs of each range to identify 15-20 acre of land with the help of the local district administration, the land would later be handed over to the Department for constructing the building.

“While the land is being identified in various Ranges, Home Department is in the process of preparing the unified design for the building which could be implemented in all Ranges”, he said.

Mr. Rao said that the Department proposes to have schooling till standard ten in the beginning, which could be extended in later years based on the requirement.

Informing that the construction work would possibly be given to the Karnataka Police Housing Corporation, Mr. Rao said that the modalities are being worked out as to who should run the schools after its construction.

He said that in order to have similar system in all schools to avoid discrimination, the Home Department is still contemplating whether to handover the schools to any private institution, government institution or to the police department itself for operation.

The government wishes to provide all facilities in the schools so that it can gain the confidence of the police personnel to send their children, Mr. Rao said.

“While police personnel are doing so much for the society and working relentlessly for safety of the people, it is the duty of the Department to provide as many facilities as possible to them and their family members”, Mr. Rao said.
