The State government on Saturday issued an order staying its earlier order of giving approval to rename the road from Catholic Club to Ambedkar Circle here after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, founder of Vijaya Bank.

St. Aloysius College located on the road and the CPI(M) had opposed the government decision.

The Vijaya Bank Employees’ Association had scheduled a function here on July 2 in connection with renaming the road. Protesting against this, students of St. Aloysius institutes and CPI(M) activists took out a march on Saturday urging the government to withdraw its order. The GO issued on Saturday said that J.R. Lobo, MLA, Mangaluru City South, wrote to the Urban Development Department on July 1 bringing the issue to the notice of government. The order said status quo should be maintained till the government took a decision.
