Governor to attend UAS-R convocation

Fifth convocation of University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, (UAS-R) is scheduled to be held on Wednesday at main auditorium of the University here on Wednesday.

Addressing a media conference at Reporters’ Guild here on Monday, Vice-Chancellor of the university P.M. Salimath said that Vajubhai Vala, Governor of Karnataka, who was also the Chancellor of the University, would preside over the event.

“For the first time after the establishment of UAS in 2009 a governor is participating in the convocation,” Dr. Salimath said. Padma Bhushan Rajendra Singh Paroda, Chairman, Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi, would deliver convocation address and Minister of Agriculture for State Krishna Byre Gowda would be present, he added.

As many as 171 undergraduates and 106 postgraduate students including 10 doctoral degree holders would be conferred with their degrees, he said. “In order to motivate and support the farming community, the University has decided to recognise one under the jurisdiction of the University and honour him or her with the farmer-scientist award, along with a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 50,000,” Dr. Salimath said.

Best teacher, best scientist, best extension scientist, best research station, best supporting staff, best field assistant and best agricultural labour awards, apart from an incentive award for three scientists who have implemented the outside funded projects worth more than Rs. 25 lakhs, would also be given at the convocation, he added.

B.V. Patil, the former Vice-Chancellor and present Director (Education), claimed that the University was known for its academic excellence. “Of the total 67 Plant Protection Officers recruited by Staff Selection Commission at a national-level recruitment, 15 belonged UAS-R. This is a testimony of quality of education being imparted to our students and their employability,” he said.

K.P. Viswanatha, Director (Extension), Shankaregowda, Associate Director (Research), D.M. Chandargi, Registrar, and others were present.
