Farmers took out a protest march and staged a dharna in Bangalore on Friday urging the government to fix the price for sugarcane for this year’s crushing season. The farmers began the march from the Bangalore City Railway Station under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene. Later, they assembled in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Seshadri Road and staged the dharna. Sangha and sene leader K.S. Puttannaiah led the farmers. He said that the government had promised Rs. 200 a quintal for the sugarcane crushed last year. Neither the promised amount has been paid nor the price for this year has been fixed, he said.
