Driven to despair by mounting debts, a 47-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his farmland at Aikanahalli, in K.R. Pet taluk, of Mandya district on Monday night.

According to Kikkeri police, the dead farmer, identified as N. Ravi, was cultivating ginger on his 2.5 acres of land for the last several years. The incident came to light on Tuesday morning with some local residents noticing the body.

Recently, he had drilled a borewell, but it failed to yield water, his family sources reportedly told the police. The crop failure for the second year, owing to severe drought, landed him in a debt-trap. Hence, he was depressed and committed suicide, sources added.

Kikkeri police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
