In sync with the growing environmental consciousness, Eco-friendly Ganesh idols with seed balls that sprout on dissolution in water are set to capture the imagination of the public.

To encourage people to be “part of the solution, not the pollution”, an NGO named Join To Help on Wednesday distributed 1,024 eco-friendly Ganesh idols for free in the city.

Dhanush, the NGO’s founder and secretary, said the concept was worked out in association with Sasya Dhama, a city-based nursery that helped embed the clay idols with medicinal seed balls.

On the completion of the rituals and the festival, the idols can be immersed in a container of water and once they dissolve, the seed balls in them will germinate in a few days when exposed to sunlight.

Alternatively, the idols may be placed in a container of soil and watered regularly till the new plants germinate.

This is being done for the first time by the organisation, which expects more people to join in the future.

The organisation says it has ensured that only eco-friendly materials were used in the preparation of idols by artisans based in the city.
