In the wake of revolutionary transformation in the realm of visual media in recent times and a change in the tastes and preferences of audiences, there is a need to overhaul the style of functioning of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), noted cinema director T.S. Nagabharana has said.
Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Shivamogga District Working Journalists’ Association here on Monday, Mr. Nagabharana said, the television programmes, including the news bulletins and popular serials, were being telecast uncensored. At present, a uniform criterion was not being followed in the certification of films. The Cinematograph Act of 1952 had become obsolete. It had failed to address these problems.
It was necessary to introduce a new law and thereby bring the television programmes under the purview of the CBFC. The method of awarding certificates for films should be streamlined and a uniform criterion followed across the county while assessing the films, he said. Nomination of persons with political background for CBFC should be done away with. Members of CBFC should understand the choices and tastes of the audience and function in a democratic manner, he said.
President of the association N. Ravi Kumar was present.
