The mortal remains of freedom fighter Nelamane Channegowda, who died in Mysore on Sunday evening, were cremated at his native village Nelamane in Srirangapatna taluk with full State honours on Monday.
Police personnel fired several rounds in the air as a mark of respect to the freedom fighter and Gandhian.
A.B. Rameshbabu Bandisiddegowda, MLA; B.N. Krishnaiah, Mandya Deputy Commissioner; Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, Mandya Superintendent of Police; B. Vani, Pandavapura Assistant Commissioner; M.S. Geetha Prasanna, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Pandavapura); and Shivakumar, Srirangapatna tahsildar, were present during the cremation, as were Mr. Gowda’s friends and relatives.
Mr. Gowda participated in the freedom movement alongside other distinguished freedom fighters in the district.
He also served as chairman of the State-owned Pandavapura Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (PSSK) for several years, and was a good friend of the former Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiya, according to sources close to Mr. Gowda’s family.
Housing Minister and Mandya district in-charge M.H. Ambareesh, in a press release issued from Bangalore, has condoled the death of Mr. Gowda.
