A body of a four-year-old child, suspected to be raped and murdered, was found in a ditch near the railway track in the city on Monday.
The spot, where the body was found, was a stone’s throw away from the office of Superintendent of Police and Central jail.
The police, who recorded statements of the victim’s grand parents, said that the girl was missing since 1 a.m. Sunday and a search for her did not yield results. The child’s body was found only in the afternoon, following which the police were informed.
According to the police, the victim’s family were nomadic and sold small goods in fairs. The family had come here to sell their wares at the annual Durgamma Sidi fair in the city. The victim’s mother had gone to Mysore for delivery while her father had gone to participate in another fair in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, leaving the victim with the grand parents.
Inspector General of Police S. Murgan, Additional Superintendent of Police Vijay Dambal and officers of Gandhi Nagar police station, along with dog squad and finger print experts, visited the spot. The Gandhi Nagar police have registered a case.
