Four more farmers commit suicide in State

Four more deaths added to the tally of farmers’ suicides in the State on Wednesday.

Of them, two were from Hassan district, and one each from Shivamogga and Tumakuru districts.

In Hassan

Marige Gowda (55) of Dindaguru in Channarayapatna taluk has left behind wife and two sons.

The police said Gowda was disturbed as his crop was infected by disease leading to a huge loss. Not only had his son borrowed Rs. 84,000 from a bank, Gowda himself had taken a private loan of Rs. 3 lakh. The Channarayapatna police have registered a case.

Mahendra (45) ended his life in his ginger field in Hurudi village of Sakleshpur taluk. According to his relatives, Mahendra had taken a private loan for agriculture and for his wife’s treatment.

Shockingly, his wife committed suicide two days ago as she was disappointed that her health had not improved despite spending so much money on her. Further, their son was killed in a road accident a year ago.

In Shivamogga

Shekhar Bhovi (35), a farmer from Muddinakoppa village near here, who had consumed poison, passed away at the Government McGann Hospital here on Wednesday.

According to the police, Bhovi had a Rs. 3-lakh loan from a nationalised bank and a cooperative bank.

In a complaint lodged in the Kumsi police station, his wife claimed that her husband was driven to suicide because he was unable to repay the loan.

In Tumakuru

Renuka Aradhya (35) of Kaarekurchi in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district hanged himself from a tree due to debt.

According to the police, the farmer had taken a gold loan of Rs. 90,000 from State Bank of Mysore, Rs. 70,000 from Primary Land Development bank and Rs. 3 lakh from moneylenders.

He is survived by wife and a seven-year-old son. The Chellur police have registered a case.
