Four byelections on the cards in Karnataka

Three MLAs and an MLC elected to the Lok Sabha

Minister for Sugar Prakash Hukkeri, who was fielded in the Lok Sabha election much against his wish and has since emerged a winner, is expected to resign from the Legislative Assembly sooner than later, which will result in a byelection for the Chikkodi-Sadalaga seat.

The others elected to the Legislative Assembly and who have now made it to the Lok Sabha are the former Chief Minister and Shikaripur MLA B.S. Yeddyurappa and Bellary Rural MLA B. Sriramulu. While Mr. Yeddyurappa is expected to resign shortly, Mr. Sriramulu submitted his resignation to Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Kagodu Thimmappa ahead of the general elections since he had to first resign from the BSR Congress before seeking admission to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Mr. Sriramulu, who was elected to the Assembly on BSR Congress ticket, would have attracted the provisions of the anti-defection law if he had not resigned.

Apart from the three byelections to the Legislative Assembly, there will be a bypoll for a seat of the Legislative Council since D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Leader of the Opposition in the Council, has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Bangalore North. Incidentally, Mr. Gowda had resigned from the Lok Sabha membership in 2011 after he took charge as the Chief Minister and was subsequently elected as a member of the Legislative Council.

Legislators who win the Lok Sabha elections have to decide on whether they prefer to continue in the Legislative Assembly/Council or opt for the Lok Sabha within 14 days. The other legislators who contested the Lok Sabha elections are Vinay Kulkarni (Dharwad) of the Congress, who was fielded against State unit president of the BJP Pralhad Joshi; A. Manju (Arkalgud) of the Congress, who was fielded against the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in Hassan, and S.S. Mallikarjun (Davangere North), who contested against G.M. Siddeshwar of the BJP.

Similar to 2009 The situation at present is similar to what happened in 2009 when the then Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly M. Mallikarjun Kharge was elected to the Lok Sabha and he resigned from the Assembly membership (Chittapur seat). Janata Dal (Secular) H.D. Kumaraswamy, who lost in the contest for the Chickballapur Lok Sabha seat, would have done a repeat of what he did in 2009 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bangalore Rural. While on that occasion, he resigned from the Assembly membership (from Ramanagaram seat), this time Ramanagaram is holding him in good stead.
