Karnataka Folklore University plans to set up folklore museums on the premises of universities in the State and has sought assistance for the purpose.

Addressing presspersons on the university campus at Gotagodi in Shiggaon taluk of Haveri district on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Ambalike Hiriyanna said he had written to Vice-Chancellors of these universities.

“We have asked the universities to spare one of their existing structures to house the museum. We plan to display around 5,000 exhibits,” he said. Although the initial plan was to set up a museum on the university campus, it could not be initiated due to want of funds and space.

Ready for print

Prof. Hiriyanna said the university’s ambitious project of ‘Karnataka Grama Charitra Kosha’, an encyclopaedia of the history of the villages across Karnataka, was in full swing and two volumes were ready for print. “The first volumes on Haveri and Bagalkot districts are ready. We are waiting for the message of the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj which we want to carry in these volumes. Once that comes, it will go for print,” he said.

Prof. Hiriyanna said that the volumes on Belagavi, Gadag, Chitradurga, Bidar and Chamarajnagar were in final stages and were likely to be ready for publication in two months. He said that the university had taken up work on documenting the life and tradition of the tribes in the State. “Of the around 50 tribal traditions in the State, we have completed the work on four tribes including Soligas and Jenukurubas. We will take up studies and documentation work on 18 other tribes soon,” he said.
