Five arrested in Bantwal murder case

The Dakshina Kannada police have arrested five persons allegedly involved in the murder of 35-year-old Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) office bearer Ashraf Kalayi.

Ashraf Kalayi, an autorickshaw driver and pPresident of SDPI Ammunje unit, was hacked to death near an engineering college in Benjanpadavu near Mangaluru on Wednesday. This increased tension in Bantwal which led to clamping of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Dakshina Kannada.

In a statement on Saturday, Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy said five persons were taken to custody on Saturday morning and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate court. The accused were being taken to police custody for further questioning, he said. Efforts were being made to find the remaining accused, he said.
