‘Fisheries, Sericulture department offices not required in Sakleshpur’

Allocation for Fisheries is less than annual salary of its officer: Kumaraswamy

November 21, 2014 11:59 am | Updated 11:59 am IST - Hassan:

H.K. Kumaraswamy, Sakleshpur MLA, has said that there is no need for the offices of the departments of Fisheries and Sericulture in Sakleshpur taluk. Offices of the assistant directors of the two departments should be shifted outside the taluk, he said at a meeting to review the progress of projects taken up by the Sakleshpur taluk panchayat on Wednesday.

The allocation of funds for the Fisheries Department in the current fiscal is only Rs. 2 lakh.

“While the allocation is a meagre Rs. 2 lakh, the total salary of the assistant director of the department will be more than Rs. 4 lakh a year. What is the point in having an office for the department, if the officer’s salary is more than the funds allocated to it?” he wanted to know.

He observed that only 12 people had been benefited by the Sericulture Department in the taluk. The area under mulberry cultivation in the entire taluk was only 5.8 acres of land so far.

No efforts seem to have been made to increase the area under cultivation by the officials concerned

“What are the officials doing all these years? If they cannot increase the number of people taking up sericulture, then there is no need for the department to have an office in the taluk,” he said.

‘Shift officials’

The officials concerned should be shifted to places, where they were required or attached to the Deputy Commissioner’s office so that their services could be utilised for better purposes, he said.

Appeal to DC

He appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to submit a detailed report on this issue to the State government.
