The Karnataka State Co-Operative Fisheries Federation Limited has decided to sell fish at a “reasonable” rate from April 4 at its outlets in Mysuru, Bengaluru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Hassan and Madikeri.

New price list

The federation said here on Wednesday that the new prices would be in force in all its outlets and no outlet could sell at prices higher than those fixed.

`All the outlets have been instructed to display the new price list in front of their units, the federation said.

Fish is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and can protect people from a range of diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, depression and arthritis, the federation said.

S. Madegowda, president of the federation, and Gangadhar V. Maddikeri, managing director of the federation, said that the total consumption in three places including Bengaluru, Mysuru and Madikeri was 8 to 10 tonnes per week currently and the federation wanted to enhance it to at least 20 tonnes a week. Hence it has decided to reduce prices. A fish weighing less than two kg will be charged an amount of Rs. 110 per kg, fish weighing less than three kg will be charged Rs. 120 per kilo and fish weighing from three kg to five kg will be charged Rs. 130 per kg.

Fish weighing above five kg will be charged Rs. 140 per kg. Cleaning charges (Rs. 10) are not included in the price.

Mr. Ganghadar said that earlier fish was being sold at rates between Rs. 150 and Rs. 170 per kg and there were a number of complaints about a few outlets collecting more. Hence the federation wanted to bring in a uniform price for fish, he said.

There are over 110 outlets in the State, including 42 in Mysuru, Mr. Ganghadar said.
