Film on Urs to now follow transparency norms

August 21, 2016 02:54 am | Updated 02:54 am IST - BENGALURU:

The ambitious idea of the Congress government to produce a full-length feature film on the former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs has runs in to rough whether, with a few film-makers demanding greater transparency in picking the director of the film.

Earlier, the government had announced T.S. Nagabharana would direct the film.

According to Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya, there has been a demand to go by the Karnataka Public Procurement Transparency Act while choosing the director. Following this, the government has decided to invite directors to send the story, screenplay and trailer to the selection committee which will evaluate them and choose the best.

“Mr. Nagabharana will also submit his script and trailer, and if the committee gets convinced, he will get the project,” Mr. Anjaneya said.

Noting that the government is spending an estimated Rs. 3 crore on the project and more if necessary, the Minister said the film would create awareness among people on factors that made Urs implement the historic Land Reforms Act in 1970 and set up the Backward Classes Welfare Department.

Interestingly, after receiving the request from the government, Mr. Bharana had begun the process of preparing a script with the support of writers and playwrights, including Prathibha Nandakumar and K.Y. Narayanaswamy.
