The State government is planning to begin work on supplying treated waste water from the Koramangala and Chalaghatta vallies in Bengaluru to the dried up tanks of Kolar, Chickballapur and Bengaluru Rural districts by September or October.
Disclosing this to reporters here on Tuesday, Minor Irrigation Minister Shivaraj Thangadagi said already tenders had been awarded to a company for preparing a Detailed Project Report May 15, he noted.
The Rs. 900-crore project proposes to fill up 108 tanks in Kolar and 32 tanks in Chickballapur besides those in Bengaluru Rural district. Sewage water will be supplied secondary treatment, he said, to ensure groundwater table increased in these districts.
The minister said the government would conduct a survey to assess the potential of supplying water from rivers to the tanks in the basin area as part of efforts to increase the groundwater position. Already such a project had been taken up in Chamarajanagar, Koppal and Channapatna taluks.
He said the government would rejuvenate 189 tanks at a rate of one tank in each taluk at a cost of Rs one crore each this year. Series of check dams and other watershed structures would be built in the districts of Raichur, Bagalkote, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Ramanagaram, he said.
A meeting of the Lake Development Authority would be held within a week to take stock of the issues related to development of tanks in and around Bengaluru City, he said.
