The four-year-old female leopard that was caught suffered injuries after it repeatedly hit itself against the cage.

A four-year-old female leopard fell into a trap laid by Forest Department officials at Kalluguduganahalli near here on Wednesday. The leopard had been moving around the village for the past several months, it is said. The officer had put a cage in the village a few days ago.

Ravindra Kumar, Assistant Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu, “Following complaints from the public, we had kept the cage in the village. This morning, we heard from the villagers that the animal is trapped in the cage.” A couple of days ago, the leopard had taken away a sheep and the left-over meat was used as a bait to attract the leopard to the cage.

After it was caught, the animal suffered injuries in its forehead as it repeatedly hit itself to the iron bars of the cage. “As of now, the animal has been kept at Gendekatte Forest Park, near Hassan. The animal will be released to forest only after treating for the injuries,” said Mr. Kumar.
