Farmers protest during Shettar visit

August 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - BALLARI:

Farmers from various villages in and around Navalgund in Dharwad district, who gathered in front of the Ballari Central Jail here on Wednesday, raised slogans against the BJP and its leaders during their visit to the jail to meet farmers arrested after the violence during protest against the interim order of the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal.

The farmers raised anti-BJP slogans for not taking the initiative in getting the Mahadayi issue resolved.

They also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should intervene to resolve the issue amicably even as Mr. Shettar, accompanied by T.H. Suresh Babu, Kampli MLA, and other BJP leaders went inside the jail. They also wanted to know why the BJP leaders, who allegedly did not bother to inquire about the plight of the farmers during their agitation seeking Mahadayi water, were suddenly making a beeline to meet the arrested farmers.

They insisted that Mr. Shettar should give a clarification about his visit and also announce that he would take the initiative of requesting the Prime Minister to intervene and resolve the vexed Mahadayi issue at the earliest.
