Farmers demand speedy completion of canal works

July 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - Mandya:

Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha staged a dharna on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway in Srirangapatna on Monday demanding the speedy completion of canal modernisation projects in the district.

They blocked traffic at Kuvempu Circle and raised slogans against the Irrigation Department, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd., State government and elected representatives.

The possibilities of losing one crop during the current agricultural season is high, owing to the slow pace of the canal projects.

They demanded that the Irrigation Department and other agencies initiate steps to complete the works and discharge water to help farmers start sowing activities.
