A farmer was electrocuted at Varadanahalli in Chickballapur taluk when he had gone to his farm on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Lakshmayya (60).

Tension prevailed in the area as the villagers staged protest against Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) for its alleged negligence causing death of the farmer.

Lakshmayya was killed on the spot when he accidentally came in contact with a live electric wire which was cut and fell from the pole near his field. Mr. Lakshmayya went to the field to harvest potatoes.

According to the villagers, Bescom authorities failed to stop the power supply even after they made repeated requests. It was done only after the intervention of higher authorities, they said.

The irate mob pelted stones at a Bescom vehicle which came to the village after the incident.

Chickballapur MLA K. Sudhakar and Bescom officials had a tough time to pacify the angry people. A compensation of Rs. 2.30 lakh will be given by Bescom, Mr. Sudhakar said.
