A farmer died of heart attack during an encroachment-clearance drive by the Forest Department at Kiragunasi village in Sorab taluk on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohan (34), who was reportedly engaged in unauthorised cultivation of forestland in the village. According to the police, when the officials began the clearance drive, Mohan rushed to his house to inform his parents. But he collapsed on his way and died.

Madhu Bangarappa, Sorab MLA, visited the village and met the family members of the deceased.

He expressed displeasure over the Forest officials undertaking the drive, despite the applications submitted by bagair hukum farmers for granting land ownership rights remaining pending.

He said that the “high-handed approach” of the Forest officials was responsible for the farmer’s death.
