A family of four, including two minors, were mowed down by a goods carrier near Nayandahalli Junction on Mysore Road here on Wednesday. The accident resulted in a huge pile-up of vehicles on the busy road in the evening.
The family was returning home on a two-wheeler from a place near Bidadi where they had gone for a village fair.
The goods vehicle, after ramming the two-wheeler, also hit a van, injuring its occupants.
The dead were identified as Siddaraju (38), his wife, Shanthamma (28), their sons, Shivaraj (3) and Yogesh (1). The family hailed from Thumbenahalli at Bidadi in Ramanagaram and was residing at Vinayakanagar near Adugodi. Siddaraju worked at a flower shop on Infantry Road.
Soon after the accident, the driver of the goods carrier, identified as Chandu, fled. Traffic was disrupted as loads of steel used in construction fell on the road, blocking vehicular movement.
While Siddaraju, Shanthamma and Shivaraj died on the spot, Yogesh died on the way to hospital. Three others, including a woman identified as Savitha, travelling in the van suffered minor injuries, the police added.
The Bytarayanapura police suspected that brake failure may have led to the accident.
