K. Rameshwarappa, Senior Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department, said that he had instructed fair price shops not to distribute ragi unless it is of good quality.

He said he had received many complaints from people from various places in the district that substandard ragi was being distributed under the public distribution system. He said that steps had been taken to replace substandard ragi.

Mr. Rameshwarappa said there were over two lakh beneficiaries and over 20,000 quintal of ragi was being distributed under the PDS system every month in the district.

He said that a portion of the ragi assignment despatched to the district may have been of low standard.
