Scholar Maankari Srinivasachar said that every ‘keertana’ composed by Sri Purandara Dasa propagated moral values, humanity and harmony.
He was speaking on the life and works of Purandara Dasa at his ‘aradhane’ organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture in Hampi on Tuesday.
“Once people understand the lyrics of the compositions, they learn that it is full of messages on leading a life of peace and harmony,” he said in reference to the communal violence occurring in the name of ‘sharna’.
Stating that celebrating the aradhane in Hampi, where Purandara Dasa spent most of his time composing keertanas, Mr. Srinivasachar expressed concern that Kannada University located in Hampi was not organising seminars to bring to light many more facts about the poet saint, who is also considered to be the father of carnatic music.
He also underlined the need for organising the aradhane at the stone mantap named after him on the bank of the Tungabhadra from next year.
“Through my Haridasa association, I’m keen to celebrate the aradhane at the mantap for three days for which I will be seeking cooperation of the authorities and other cultural organisations,” he said.
Gadiganur Halappa, vice-president, Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation, inaugurated the event. Earlier, a puja was performed to the Purandara Dasa idol etched on a pillar and a musical tribute was paid. Musicians and dance artistes performed.
