Elections to 266 GPs in Mysuru district on May 29

As many as 266 gram panchayats (GPs) will go to polls in Mysuru district on May 29. The State Election Commission (SEC) announced the elections to GPs on Monday.

To ensure free and fair elections, 266 returning officers (ROs) and 293 assistant returning officers (AROs) have been appointed, and the first-level of training has been imparted to them.

These officers will function either at the GP office or at its headquarters, and receive nominations from the candidates.

1,849 segments

In the 266 GPs, there are 1,849 constituencies and 4,744 seats, including 2,443 seats reserved for women, which will go to polls.

A total of 13,92,179 voters, including 7,10,101 male and 6,82,078 female, will exercise their franchise. The highest number of voters are in Mysuru taluk – 2,77,592 voters, and the least number of voters – 1,54,810 – in Periyapatna taluk.

The GP seats have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and SC (women); Scheduled Tribes and ST (women); Backward Classes A and BCA (women); Backward Classes B and BCB (women), general and general (women). The tahsildars in the district can be contacted for further details on the number of reserved seats. As many as 1,914 polling booths, including 66 auxiliary booths, have been set up for the polls. The highest number of booths is in Mysuru taluk – 336 booths – and the least number in Periyapatna taluk – 217 booths.

According to the district administration, 8,424 presiding and polling officers would be appointed to conduct the polls. A total of 2,106 presiding officers and 6,318 polling officers (first, second, third and fourth officers) would be appointed in the days ahead.

Each booth consists of one presiding officer and three polling officers. If the booth consists of more than 1,000 voters, then another polling officer (fourth officer) will be appointed, said Deputy Commissioner C. Shikha in a release here.

Code of conduct

Five to six GPs will have one taluk-level officer to watch over the enforcement of the model code of conduct that will come into effect from May 10 and will be in force till June 7.

The Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) will serve as the assistants to the taluk-level officers in their respective GPs to enforce the code of conduct effectively.

The code of conduct applies only to the respective GPs and does not apply to the town panchayats, town municipalities and the city corporations, the Deputy Commissioner clarified.

Control rooms have been set up to report any information or lodge complaints with regard to the elections.
