EC assesses poll preparedness in Karnataka

A six-member team of Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday concluded a two-day visit to the poll-bound Karnataka and held consultations with various political parties and poll officials in the State.

The team led by Umesh Sinha, senior Deputy Election Commissioner, met a cross section of leaders of political parties to assess the poll preparedness.

While the Commission held separate meetings with political parties, it later met poll officials in the State to discuss preparations and challenges. Karnataka is likely to go to poll in April-May.

Electoral roll

The Election Commission of India is likely to extend the date for enrolling the names of eligible voters in the electoral roll. Currently, the last date for enrolment of names in the electoral roll is January 12.

Briefing media persons here after a review of poll preparations for the State Legislative Assembly elections, Mr. Sinha said officials in various districts have demanded extension of the last date for enrolment of voters.

Currently, there are 4.90 crore voters in Karnataka in 224 Assembly constituencies. Both online and offline facilities are available for enrolment of names for voters list.

Mr. Sinha said the final electoral roll would be published on February 20. However, those who have filled forms online seeking enrolment of their names would be included in the electoral roll till the filing of nomination papers by candidates, he said.

SMS service launched

To know Assembly constituency, polling station address and other details, voters can send SMS to 9731979899 by typing ‘KAEPIC space ID card Number.’

Mr. Sinha launched the SMS service in the presence of Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar.
