DSS set to hold rally in Bengaluru today

The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (Ambedkar Vaada) will hold a rally near Town Hall in Bengaluru on Monday to register protest against the derogatory remarks made against Dalits, particularly by Madhu Mishra, suspended leader of the Uttar Pradesh BJP women’s wing, and Baba Ramdev, the yoga expert.

Mavavalli Shankar, convenor of DSS, condemned Ms. Mishra’s statement that those who used to polish shoes were ruling with the support of the Constitution. He said the protestors would demand her arrest.

He said ever since the BJP came to power, there have been repeated attacks on Dalits and minorities. Citing several such instances reported across various States, including one in Karnataka where a dalit youth was killed for marrying a caste Hindu girl, he said they clearly indicated that the BJP and the Sangh Parivar were disturbing amity in the country.

Mr. Shankar, while welcoming Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to set aside Rs. 17,000 crore for the welfare of dalits, urged the latter to withdraw the clause permitting diversion of funds earmarked under Special Component Plan.

With regard to their demand that a Dalit be made Chief Minister, Mr. Shankar said there was no second opinion on the issue. However, it is for the legislative parties should take a decision, he added.
