The activists of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) staged a protest in the city on Tuesday condemning the alleged derogatory comments passed by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) chief Ram Bahadur Rai on the role of B.R. Ambedkar in drafting of the Constitution.

Addressing the protest meet, Chinnaiah, convener of DSS, said that Mr. Rai in a recent interview had said that the role of Dr. Ambedkar in framing the Constitution was a myth.

Mr. Chinnaiah said that Mr. Ambedkar, who was a great scholar, played a crucial role in framing the Indian Constitution. With the objective to eradicate the socio-economic disparities that prevailed in the Indian society, values like equality and social justice were enshrined in the Constitution by Mr. Ambedkar for which he is hailed as the architect of the Indian Constitution, he added.

Rai's apology sought

The statements issued by Mr. Rai that Mr. Ambedkar played only a secondary role in framing the Constitution should be withdrawn, he said. He said that Mr. Rai has hurt the sentiments of followers of Mr. Ambedkar and those who believe in social justice. He pressed Mr. Rai to apologise.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the office of the DC in this regard.
