The much-awaited drinking water unit was closed hours after it was inaugurated at K.R. Puram in Hassan.

The clean drinking water distribution unit, which was inaugurated at K.R. Puram in Hassan on April 13, has remained closed owing to alleged political differences between H.S. Anil Kumar, president, Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC), and H.M. Suresh Kumar, a member of the council.

The unit was set up in CMC ward number 3 at a cost of ₹5 lakh with an aim to provide clean water to the residents.

Mr. Suresh Kumar, a BJP supporter, who represents ward 3, on Wednesday, told presspersons that the CMC president closed the unit hours after it was inaugurated by A. Manju, district in-charge Minister.

“The unit was set up using the funds released in 2014-15. The president had nothing to do with the project. But he locked up the unit. I thought he would reopen it soon after making proper arrangements for maintenance. However, it has not been opened so far,” he alleged.

Residents disappointed

Earlier, Mr. Suresh Kumar had requested the CMC to allow a local residents’ welfare association to maintain the unit, which was opposed by the CMC. “The CMC neither allowed the local welfare association to maintain the unit nor made any alternative arrangement for the same. The residents, who expected that the unit would meet their drinking water needs, are disappointed,” he said.
