C.G. Betsurmath, Commissioner of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), has appealed to the shopkeepers on the Devaraj Urs Road, Ashoka Road, and Sayyaji Rao Roads not to store garbage in plastic bags and keep it in front of their shops.

At a special meeting organised by the Mysuru Chamber of Commerce regarding the ban on plastic here on Wednesday, the Commissioner said that animals, including rodents, usually tear open the plastic bags at nights and this results in garbage spilling out onto the roads.

He asked the traders and shopkeepers to suggest a time which is convenient for them (9.30 a.m. or 10 a.m.) so that a garbage collection van, along with the required manpower, could collect the garbage from the shops itself.

Mr. Betsurmath said that the MCC wants the city to retain the tag of being the cleanest city in the country for the third time in a row.

“Maintaining cleanliness around your shops would be beneficial to you … tourists would visit your shops if it is clean and this would increase your business,” he told the shopkeepers.

The Commissioner said that the government had issued a gazette notification banning the use of plastic.

He appealed to the people to realise the ill-effects of plastic and take a pledge against using plastic bags.

The Mysuru district administration is committed in banning plastic bags completely, he added.

Mayor Bhyrappa and Sudhakar S. Shetty and Satish, office bearers of the Mysuru Chamber of Commerce were present on the occasion.
