The district administration has resolved to conserve and restore waterbodies, particularly tanks, using CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) funds. Prior to removing silt and cleaning up tanks, the administration will evacuate encroachment and erect fencing around tanks.

Rejuvenation and restoration works in over nine tanks situated around the city will be taken up in the first phase and later on 17 tanks. T. Venkatesh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru district, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that bunds of tanks would be strengthened, landscaping would be considered, and pathways would be erected.

The nine tanks to be restored in phase one are Hebbal tank, Bommanahalli, Kergalli, Hinkal Rayanakere, Margondanhalli Kere, Devanuru Kere, Shanthamanahalli Kere, Daluvai Kere, and Nachaanahalli Kere.

Mr. Venkatesh said that if waterbodies are rejuvenated, substantial sources could be tapped to meet the city’s growing drinking water requirements. It would help in harvesting rainwater and extending water security during non-rainy seasons. Besides, it provides alternative opportunities like fishing and grazing area for livestock, he said.

If corporate houses come forward to take up works, the district administration will provide technical guidance of the Irrigation and other departments, Mr. Venkatesh said.
