‘Discrimination against women must be eliminated’

May 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:55 am IST - KALABURAGI:

International Women’s Day and Labour Day celebrations will not have any meaning unless the discrimination against women is eliminated, said Nagabai Bulla, KPSC member and chairperson of the Kannada Research Department of Gulbarga University on Sunday.

Inaugurating the World Women’s and Labour Day celebrations organised by the district unit of the Karnataka State Government Pharmacist Association, Ms. Bulla said that just because a negligible per cent of women were empowered and working in different fields that does not mean that women had progressed.

Ms. Bulla praised the contribution of the 12th century social reformers to eliminate gender inequality and to extend equal opportunities and added that their impact had made it possible for women to get education.

Even though the system of patriarchystill continues in India, many women have broken the traditions and got educated. Expressing concern over the rising cases of sexual assault, Ms. Bulla said that women should be aware of the necessary Acts to protect themselves and fight against such incidents.
