The death of a zoology student of Karnataka State Women’s University (KSWU), reportedly due to cardiac arrest, led to a snap protest by students here on Friday, who accused the university of failing to provide better ambulance facility to save the girl.
According to university authorities, Vijaylakshmi Bhavikatti, a student of M.Sc (Zoology) second semester and native of Nelogi, Gadag district, suffered a heart attack in her hostel on Friday at around 2.30 p.m. She was immediately rushed to Al-Ameen Medical College and Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Speaking to The Hindu , University Registrar S.A. Kazi said that the student was a heart patient and was suffering from the ailment from her childhood. “This information was given to us by the parents of the girl when they arrived here to collect the body. The father of the girl told us that she had a major heart ailment which had no treatment, and had to live with it. The parents wanted to take the body without autopsy; however as per norms, we got the autopsy conducted and handed over the body to the parents on Friday,” he said.
Meanwhile, the students, who went a snap protest on Friday, alleged that the ambulance did not have equipment such as oxygen cylinder which could have saved the life the student.
The university authorities, meanwhile, promised action, after which, the students withdrew their protest.
