The second annual convocation of Davangere University will be held at Shivagangotri campus at 11 a.m. on Monday, Davangere University Vice-Chancellor B.B. Kaliwal has said.

He told presspersons here on Sunday that Governor Vajubhai Vala would preside over the convocation and Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande would be the chief guest. The university would confer honorary doctorate on three persons for their outstanding services.

A total of 48 gold medals would be given away to students with outstanding performance. R. Jayaprakash of the economics department would get four gold medals; Nigar Sultan of English department, N. Ashwini of Kannada department and M.B. Shwetha of commerce department would get three gold medals each.

S. Supriya of chemistry department, M.J. Vijayashri of mathematics department and B.M. Bindushri of physics department would get two gold medals each, he said.

Vacant posts

Answering a question, Mr. Kaliwal said a proposal had been submitted to the State government seeking steps to fill the vacant posts in the university.

Of the 23 departments, five had full-time faculty and the remaining were facing staff shortage.

Though the university needed 349 full-time faculty, it had only 29 permanent and 35 part time lecturers and 125 guest lecturers. “There are plans to enhance the wages of guest lecturers from the next academic year,” he added.
