The police have registered cases against six youth from Gokak town for assaulting a Dalit youth over a petty issue on Friday.

Mallikarjun Balappa Bhajantri (27) was beaten up after he quarrelled with some young men who had removed the swing at the annual Siddeshwar jatra car festival. The victim sought to know why the swing was removed from the fair and picked up a quarrel with the accused. The accused reportedly assaulted him with stones and a machete.

Mallikarjun was rushed to the Gokak taluk hospital. He is said to be out of danger.

Balappa, Mallikarjun’s father, complained to the police that the accused had tried to murder his son.

The Gokak police have registered a case under Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and other sections of the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.
