Veterinary Department officials have culled over 1.4 lakh chicken to weed out a possible infection of bird flu in a private farm at Molkera in Humnabad taluk of Bidar district. The operation took three days to be completed and ended at around 3 p.m on Thursday.

Fifty teams of five people each and 50 labourers culled 1,42,789 birds. They were packed in gunny bags peppered with disinfectant, and buried six feet under the ground in eight pits, and covered with lime and other chemicals.

The Arunodaya poultry farm will remain closed for 90 days now. After that, it will be opened after seeking approvals from the authorities concerned. Workers involved in the culling operation would be kept under observation till Friday evening.

A State government officer said separate teams would be formed to cull the 582 birds that are within the ‘fly zone’ of one kilometre in Molkera village. They include chicken and ducks of hybrid and native varieties. A health camp would remain operative in Molkera village for two days.
