An old woman suffering from depression and her husband committed suicide in Belagavi on Sunday night.

Narayan Lakshman Killekar (80) and Vasundhara Killekar (68) were found hanging from the ceiling in their apartment in Vimal Plaza on Goods Shed Road. They were the in-laws of Renu Killekar, former Deputy Mayor of Belagavi city.

Killekar had retired after serving in the Indian Air Force. Family sources said Vasundhara was suffering from depression and was under treatment for five years now.

The Killekars were living with their son Suhas, his wife Renu and grandchildren in the apartment. About one hour past midnight on Sunday, Narayan and Vasundhara woke up and went out of the apartment and locked the main door. Narayan blocked the closed circuit TV camera with a tape at around 1.30 a.m. Then the couple used two ropes to hang themselves in the passage in front of the door.

The CCTV has captured Narayan pasting a tape on the camera. Police have obtained the footage. They suspect that he helped Vasundhara hang herself first and then hanged himself.

The security guard who came to the flat in the morning noticed the bodies at 6 a.m. He alerted the neighbours who called the family members and asked them to open the door from inside.

Senior police officials visited the spot. Khade Bazar police have registered a case. A post-mortem was conducted at the district hospital and the bodies were handed over to the family.
