Three to be conferred doctorates

The second convocation of the Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University will be held here on Tuesday and violinist L. Subramaniam will deliver the convocation address.

The university, which is the second of its kind in the country (the first being Indira Kala Sangeeth Vishwavidyalaya at Khairagarh, Chattisgarh), will also confer doctorates on Gowri Kuppuswamy (Carnatic music, vocal), N. Rajam (violin) and Nadoja Enagi Balappa (theatre).

Varsity Vice-Chancellor Sarvamangala Shankar told presspersons here on Sunday that the convocation will be held at Nityotsava Hall and Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai R. Vala and Basavaraja Rayareddi, Pro-Chancellor and Minister for Higher Education, will be present.

In all, 47 candidates are eligible to receive degrees at the convocation of whom 17 students will receive gold medals, three students will receive cash awards, apart from nine students who have secured ranks.

Of the 47 students, 24 are postgraduates and six graduates in vocal music; six postgraduates and one graduate in instrumental music, and seven postgraduates and three graduates in dance.

In all, there are 17 men and 30 women eligible to receive their respective degree.

The highlight of the day will be performance by alumni with Harish presenting a saxophone concert, Kiranmayi with a Hindustani vocal presentation and Kumari Surabhi rendering a Carnatic presentation.

Niranjana, Registrar of the university, said that the doctorate would be conferred on Mr. Balappa at his residence as he cannot travel from his hometown in Savadatti in Belagavi district owing to his age (103).
