The “Congress-free India” agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking shape and will soon become a reality, said B.S. Yeddyurappa, BJP’s state president.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he said the Congress lost its stronghold in Assam to BJP in the recently-held Assemby elections. It could also not make a notable difference in four other states – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal. Congress, which held the sway in centre for over four decades, was reduced to a pathetic situation, he remarked.
He said the Congress was not reconciling with the changing political order and loss of its voter base across the country. “The Congress is, therefore, indulging in weak criticism against the Prime Minister and the NDA government, even though their government was marked by multi-crore scams and scandals,” he charged.
PM at Davangere
Mr. Modi, who has planned to address public gatherings to mark two-years of the BJP-led NDA government, will address a public meeting at Davangere on May 29. On May 27, Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs M. Venkaiah Naidu will visit Bengaluru. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit Bidar. However, the schedule is yet to be decided.
Responding to questions about Mr. Naidu’s likely nomination to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the BJP’s central committee would decide on the candidate. He clarified that no names had been suggested so far.
Asked about Mr. Naidu’s contribution to Karnataka, since he has represented the state in the Rajya Sabha for three consecutive terms since 1998, Mr. Yeddyurappa said Mr. Naidu had contributed to the party in various capacities.
Voter-worker contact programme
The BJP, which is already in election mode in the wake of the biennial elections to the State legislative council, has decided to launch State-wide voter-worker contact programme next month to gear up for the next assembly elections in 2018.
Mr. Yeddyurappa said BJP was poised to win in all the council seats, as a massive campaign had already been launched.
“We will contest from 220 constituencies with a target of winning at least 120 seats in the next Assembly elections in the State,” he said and added that he would commence his state-side tour, starting with all the 28 Assembly constituencies in Bengaluru, from June 11.
