The Congress has come to power at Jog-Kargal Town Panchayat in Sagar taluk by winning seven of the total 11 seats.
The polling was held on Friday while the counting of votes was taken up on Monday. The Bharatiya Janata Party has won two seats, while the remaining two seats have been won by Independent candidates.
The town panchayat came into existence in 2002. In the first election, the Janata Dal (Secular) had secured majority and was in power for five years. In the second election held in 2008, no political party could secure majority. From 2008 to 2011, the BJP was in power here with the support of Independent candidates. Later, the Congress came to power with the support of Independent candidates and a Janata Dal (S) candidate.
The December 5 election had become a prestige issue for that Congress as it had won the Sagar Assembly constituency in the 2013 election.
As Kagodu Thimmappa, local MLA and Speaker of Legislative Assembly, had to remain out of party politics, Manjunatha Bhandary, member of the All-India Congress Committee, had led the party’s campaigning here.
After the result was announced, the Congress workers in Sagar expressed their joy by bursting fire crackers. President of Sagar City Municipal Council N. Lalithamma Mohan, president of the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee K. Holeyappa, and party functionaries Kagodu Annappa and T.N. Srinivas were present.
