Congress workers staged a demonstration at Tipu Sultan Garden near the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Saturday condemning BJP leader Subramanian Swamy’s attempt to “malign” the image of AICC president Sonia Gandhi over the VVIP chopper scam.

Raising slogans against the BJP, the agitators blocked the road outside the DC office for a while and burnt an effigy of Mr. Swamy.

The activists alleged that Mr. Swamy was reopening a “closed issue” and hurling allegations against Ms. Gandhi for serving his own vested interests and for political mileage.

“The deal with AgustaWestland was suspended after the Union government realised that three VVIP helicopters supplied by the company were of substandard quality. When bribery allegations surfaced in the deal, the UPA government promptly handed over the case to the CBI in 2013. A parliamentary committee was also formed to probe the case. Nowhere Sonia Gandhi’s name came up. Yet, Mr. Swamy is and the BJP is making such a big hue and cry on the issue just to settle their old score with the Congress,” A. Vasanth Kumar, president of the District Congress Committee and chairperson of Tungabhadra Command Area Development Authority said.
