Cong. member elected unopposed as Vijayapura Mayor, BJP member is Deputy Mayor

Anisfatima Bakshi of the Congress and Gopal Ghatakamble of the BJP were elected unopposed as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Vijayapura, respectively, here on Saturday.

Members to the standing committees were also elected unopposed.

The Congress and the BJP came close to each other in the election with the support of the Janata Dal (Secular).

The post of Mayor was reserved for Backward Classes (A) woman and that of Deputy Mayor for Scheduled Castes (General).

This is for the first time after city municipal council was upgraded as a corporation that the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor are being elected unopposed.

In the last two elections, Sajjadepeeran Mushrif and Sangeeta Pol won a 12-month term each.

In the 35-member corporation, the BJP has 13 members, Congress 10, JD (S) eight, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Karnataka Janata Party have one each, and two are Independents.

Ms. Bakshi told presspersons that her priority would be to get the long-pending master plan project completed, and also make the orporation corruption free.

She also promised to develop the city by utilizing the available funds properly.

N. Jayaram, Regional Commissioner, chaired the election proceedings. Additional Deputy Commissioner H.B. Budeppa, zilla panchayat chief executive offer Sundresh Babu, and corporation commissioner Harsha Shetty were present.
