CONCOR to set up container yard near Nanjangud

October 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - MYSURU:

The Container Corporation of India (Concor) will establish an inland container yard near Nanjangud which will give a boost to exports from Mysuru.

A long-pending demand of local industries, the container deport facility will be established at Kadakola and serve the industries in Mysuru and Nanjangud and facilitate their cargo and freight movement to the port.

The decision to establish a container depot was taken by Concor a few years ago in view of the export potential and significant movement of freight from the region but the project not make any progress.

However Deputy General Manager of Concor, Anup Dayanand Sadhu, said here on Friday that 15 acres of land has been earmarked for the purpose at Kadakola and the work on laying a track would commence in due course.

The initial cost of the project is pegged at Rs.15 crore and depending on the response the facilities will be upgraded depending on the usage.

The demand for a container depot is pending since 20 years through there was not less than two rakes of freight traffic being generated from the region every week.

“Once established the container depot will function as a single window agency providing custom clearance and other formalities that are normally undertaken at the port,” said Mr. Dayanand.

Apart from giving a boost to exports from the region, the lead time taken to ship the containers to port will be reduced thus saving costs apart from generating revenue for the Concor.

“At present most of the cargo meant for exports is sent to Chennai port by road which adds to the cost and time whereas the Concor facility at Nanjangud will provide a safer and more reliable alternative to road. The bulk of products that are exported from the region include general engineering products, coffee, electronic items etc.,” he added.
