The activists of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest on Friday demanding that the Government commence the work of establishment of a digital library in the city at the earliest.

The Ministry of Culture has sanctioned a digital library to Shivamogga city in the year 2015. It has been planned to construct the new building for the digital library measuring 85x40 feet at the premises of City Central Library. The work is estimated to cost Rs. one crore of which the Ministry would provide Rs. 87 lakhs and State government would bear the remaining expense.

Addressing the protest meet, Srijith D.L., President of NSUI district unit said that the establishment of digital library would help students and those preparing for competitive exams to gain access to books, journals and magazines online.

As the city has emerged as an education hub in recent times, the establishment of digital library would help the students expand their knowledge, he said.

The project, though sanctioned to the city last year, has seen inordinate delay in commencement of the work due to absurd reasons, he said.

The protesters also submitted a memorandum to Harish, Deputy Director of Department of Public Libraries in this regard.

Secretary of NSUI State unit Chethan K., functionaries Balaji H.S. and C.G. Madhusudan took part.

The work of

setting up the digital library is estimated to cost Rs. 1 crore
