DG and IGP of the State Om Prakash’s remarks have highlighted the typical demand-supply gap in the staffing of the Belagavi Commissionerate, where only about 60 posts had been filled so far.

Speaking to presspersons after reviewing a parade by police personnel here on Thursday, he said that the remaining 600 posts would be filled in a phased manner.

The government had sanctioned Rs. 25 crore to strengthen the commissionerate here and the amount would be released in five equal installments.

He said the Police Department faced a shortage with nearly 8,000 vacant posts and measures had been taken to fill them.

To a question on the increasing chain-snatching incidents in the city and other parts of the district, Mr. Prakash said two members of the gang involved in these offences had been already arrested and the police was on the lookout for the others and the looted valuables.

He thanked the Goa police for tipping off the Belagavi police resulting in the arrest of two members of the elusive chain-snatchers’ gang from Maharashtra.

Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Umesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police Ravikanthe Gowda, Police Commissioner S. Ravi and other senior officials of the department were present.
