N. Gopu Kumar, Deputy Secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), South Western Regional Office, Bangalore, said here on Sunday that colleges which have not been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) may not get grants from the UGC in future.

He was speaking to principals at a meeting organised by the Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University.

Mr. Kumar said that the UGC wanted all colleges to get accredited by the NAAC. Colleges must submit an application (letter of intent) to the NAAC by the end of March confirming their interest in accreditation. If colleges failed to do so, the UGC might not consider them while sanctioning grants, he said.

Mr. Kumar said that as per the guidelines for the special scheme of faculty development programme for colleges for the 12th plan (2012-17), teachers working in self-financing colleges (government unaided colleges) were eligible to get teacher fellowships provided they fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Such teachers should not be aged above 50 and should have at least three years of teaching experience.

Mr. Kumar said that colleges could also get funds from the UGC for development of sports infrastructure. He said that the previous performance of the students in particular sports would be taken into consideration while providing support in the form of infrastructure and equipment.

Funds are available to develop composite football/cricket playfield with pitch, hockey field, volleyball and basketball court, indoor sports training facilities with wooden flooring, fitness centre and the like.

Using the general assistance fund, colleges can install CCTV cameras. But, funds will not be allotted for cables, he said.

H. Madhava Bhat, president of the association, and Y. Bhaskar Shetty, secretary, private college management association, spoke.
