St. Philomena’s College has been conferred with the status of ‘College of Excellence’ (CE) by the University Grants Commission (UGC) following the ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ (CPE) status granted five years ago. At present, only three colleges in Karnataka have this tag.

As on September 22, 12 colleges in India had been conferred with CE status.

During November/December 2014, 79 colleges were reviewed for the continuation of CPE elevation to CE. Of the 79, only two colleges got the status of ‘College of Excellence’ and St. Philomena’s College is honoured to be one among the two, according to a press release here.

The college established in 1946 has achieved many credentials during its seven decades of service. The first private degree college in the city , St. Philomena’s College became autonomous in 2011.

In 2014, the college was accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade and 3.58 CGPA in the second cycle.      The newly acquired CE status is another milestone. The CE status is granted with a generous funding of Rs. 2 crore to be utilised during a period of five years from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2020, the release said.

The grant is based on an evaluation of mandatory requirements. St. Philomena’s College is considered for the grant as it fulfils the mandate of being an autonomous institution with a CGPA score of more than 3.5, according to the release.
