Two empty coaches of the Mysuru-Bagalkot Basava Express rake which was being shunted from the pit line to the platform at Mysuru station went off the rails delaying the arrival and departure of a few trains on the Mysuru-Bengaluru section, on Tuesday.

The empty rake was being shunted to the platform after maintenance at the pit line in preparation for its departure to Bengaluru when two coaches went off the track.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager P. Ram said two coaches jumped the track while backing and an inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause. The incident took place at the “top point” which in railway parlance is the place from where the main track branches off to different platforms.

The derailment was reported at around 12.05 p.m. and the movement of some of the trains on the Mysuru-Bengaluru section was affected. The track was cleared for traffic at around 5.10 p.m.

The Chennai-bound Shatabdi Express which was to depart from the city at 2.15 p.m. was delayed by 35 minutes. The Mysuru-Mayiladuthurai Express was rescheduled to depart at 6.30 p.m. instead of 3.30 p.m. The inbound Rajya-Rani Express from Bengaluru was terminated at Naganahalli and resumed its return journey to Bengaluru from that station.

The Mysuru-Sholapur Gol Gumbuz Express departed at 6.25 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. while the departure of Chamarajanagar-Tirupathi Fast Passenger was delayed by one hour. The other trains that were rescheduled included the Madurai Express, Mysuru-Ajmer Express, Mysuru-Hampi Express, Mysuru-Bengaluru Passenger and Mysuru-Arsikere Passenger. The inbound Tipu Express was delayed by 45 minutes
