The Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC) is apprehensive about being able to provide drinking water to residents, given the amount of water available in Hemavati reservoir at Gorur at present.
As on Tuesday, only 3.25 tmcft of water is available in the reservoir and the level has fallen below the dead storage.
“If the State government decides to draw water from the dead storage to fulfil the request from Tamil Nadu, we will not be left with water to meet our requirements in Hassan,” H.S. Anil Kumar, president, CMC, said. The CMC, on Tuesday, had taken mediapersons to the reservoir.
Mr. Kumar said, “We are drawing 8 MLD of water from the reservoir. Considering the quantity of water in the reservoir at present, we can provide drinking water to our people in the city till the beginning of the rainy season at the rate of once every three days. However, our situation will get worse if water is diverted to KRS to meet water needs in Tamil Nadu,” he said.
As per the World Health Organisation’s guidelines, every individual requires a minimum of 135 litres of water per day. The CMC would need at least 24 MLD of water to provide water as per these guidelines. “We are getting only 8 MLD of water, besides two MLD from Haluvagilu tank and another MLD from borewells. With the available 13 MLD of water, we cannot meet the WHO guidelines,” he said.
